If you ever ask me what my favorite style of house is, there's no hesitation: the Seattle Craftsman.

We lived in one for years. We redid one. And the whole time, my goal was to keep as much of the original character as possible while bringing the bones of the house into the modern era. Craftsman homes have a way of making you fall in love with something that is genuinely irreplaceable — the trim detail, the built-ins, the porch, the roofline. That sense of craftsmanship (it's in the name) that you just don't find in newer construction.

What Makes a Craftsman a Craftsman

The classic Seattle Craftsman is typically a 1910s to 1930s bungalow or two-story with a prominent front porch, low-pitched roof with wide eaves, exposed rafter tails, and hand-crafted woodwork throughout. The materials are natural — wood, stone, brick — and the feel is warm and grounded in a way that stucco-over-foam construction simply cannot replicate.

They're also deeply woven into Seattle's neighborhood identity. Drive through Wallingford, Green Lake, Fremont, Madison Park, or parts of Kirkland, and the Craftsman defines the streetscape. Owning one connects you to the history of the city in a way that living in a new build just doesn't.

What to Know Before You Buy One

Here's the thing nobody tells you when you fall in love with one at an open house: Craftsman homes come with quirks, and they require a buyer who understands what they're getting into.

Older electrical (knob and tube in some cases), plaster walls, original single-pane windows, older sewer lines — these are all real considerations. They don't necessarily mean you shouldn't buy the house, but they absolutely need to be factored into your budget and your inspection process.
