Ideal for: upstairs laundry appliances (if a washing machine in a second-floor closet leaks, you want to know immediately before it soaks through to the floor below), under kitchen and bathroom sinks.
Step up from the basic sensor: these devices attach to a specific appliance or system and will automatically cut off the water supply to that unit when moisture is detected. Great for washing machines and water heaters located in high-risk spots.
This is my recommendation for anyone with an upstairs laundry setup. The combination of a washing machine on the second floor plus no automatic shutoff is a recipe for a very bad day.
The most comprehensive option: a device installed by a plumber on your main water line that monitors total household water usage and automatically shuts off the entire home's water supply if it detects abnormal flow patterns — suggesting a leak somewhere in the system.
These range widely in price and sophistication. Some simply shut off; others integrate with smart home systems, track usage patterns, and identify wasteful habits. Several models are now included or discounted as part of certain home insurance policies.
